The long read

From the settlement to the Lido: eight years of coverage

Fifteen stories, six years, one thread: a student who became a journalist, a journalist who became a documentary maker, a documentary maker now working in VR. Scroll to follow.

2018

A name on a list

In November 2018 the Government of Ceará published the students selected for the final phase of the Youth Ambassadors program. One of them came from a rural settlement in Santa Quitéria, in the semi-arid interior of the state.

2019

First in the family

G1 told the story in March: the son of farmers, third of six children, was the first in his family to enter a university. That year the trajectory became a beat of its own: an exchange in the United States, a youth summit in Lahore, a forum in Argentina.

2021

National television

In June 2021 Jornal Hoje, TV Globo's national newscast, covered Cadastra Eu!: a student drive that registered people without internet for the Covid-19 vaccine. G1, O Povo and TV UFC followed. The project became an official UFC extension program.

2023

Four awards in one night

At Expocom Northeast 2023, UFC journalism students won four categories, among them Ceará em Cena and the podcast Ausências. The same year the university reported on Midiando, the media-literacy project that reached 1,200 people.

2024

A film about the wind

In April 2024 SEDUC Ceará announced the premiere of Filhos do Vento, a feature documentary on the Cumbe Quilombo, where a wind farm was built on community land without consultation. Cine Ceará picked it as 1 of 3 features out of 100+.

2026

Festivals, not headlines

The latest chapters are at festivals rather than in newspapers: SXSW with Reality Looks Back, SIGGRAPH's Immersive Pavilion, and Venice Immersive, where Out of the Ashes, the film whose behind-the-scenes documentaries he directed, premiered in competition. The next story is being written in VR.
